Bedeutung und Verwendung: 

Das GIF-Format oder auch "Graphics Interchange Format" wird oft für Cliparts oder Animationen benutzt und zur schnellen Kommunikation von Emotionen in sozialen Medien und Messengern genutzt.

Entwicklungsjahr: 

Das GIF-Format wurde von Steve Wilhite im Jahre  1987 entwickelt und dann von dem US-Online-Dienst CompuServe als Farbformat eingeführt, da das frühere Format ein RLE-Format war, was nur Schwarzweißbilder darstellen konnte. 

Vorteile:

-sehr kompaktes Format verlustfreie Kompression

-Transparente Hintergründe sind möglich

-Interlaced Bildaufbau ist möglich

-gut geeignet für Icons, Buttons, Logos, Symbole, Skizzen

Nachteile:

-nur 256 Farben nicht besonders gut für realitätsnahe Fotos
